The Use of Marble in the Architecture of "Asturica Augusta"

RESUMEN: En el trabajo se estudian los materiales constructivos marmóreos hallados en las excavaciones de Asturica Augusta entre los años 1971 y 1994. La combinación de petrografía y catodoluminiscencia ha permitido identificar el empleo mayoritario de diversas rocas ornamentales leonesas (calizas griottes rosas y cremas de la Formación Láncara, calIzas blancas de Vegadeo, mármoles blanco grisáceos de Cuevas del Sil y San Fiz y lumaquela de la Cordillera Cantábrica), junto a mármoles portugueses blancos y grises del Anticlinal de Estremoz, Viana do Alentejo y Trigaches. Su uso, ya en época augústea, se generaliza entre Claudio y los Flavios. Se analizan las posibles rutas de acceso, a partir de las diferentes hipótesis planteadas por algunos autores.ABSTRACT: The essay studies the marble building materials found in the archeological digs of Asturica Augusta between 1971 and 1994. The combination of petrography and cathodoluminescence have identified the major use of different ornamental stones from León (pink and cream limestone griottes from Láncara Formation, white limestones from Vegadeo, white and grey marbles from Cuevas del Sil and San Fiz and maroon limestone from Cantabrian mountains), also white and grey portuguese marbles from Estremoz Anticline, Viana do Alentejo and Trigaches. Its use, since Augustian period, became widespread between Claude and the Flavians. Also, it discusses the possible approaches, according to the different hypotheses made by some authors
